Jürgen Kriz, whose academic journey took him through the universities of Hamburg and Vienna, earned his Ph.D. in Psychology, Philosophy, Education, Astronomy, and Astrophysics in 1969. He began his career at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna, before lecturing at the University of Hamburg, and later, from 1972 to 1974, served as Professor of Statistics at the University of Bielefeld. From 1974 to 1999, he headed the chair of Empirical Social Research, Statistics, and Philosophy of Science at the University of Osnabrück, followed by a professorship in Psychotherapy and Clinical Psychology until 1999.
As a visiting professor, Kriz taught in Vienna, Zurich, Berlin, Riga, Moscow, and the USA. He played a significant role in the international multidisciplinary journal "Gestalt Theory" and was the editor of the textbook series "Basic Knowledge in Psychology." With over 300 scientific publications, including more than 20 monographs and about 100 book chapters, he particularly influenced the fields of Statistics, Research Methodology, and Science Criticism. He is notably recognized for developing the Person-Centered Systems Theory.
His critical examination of the limitations of formal models and the emphasis on the importance of subjectivity in psychotherapy research gained broad recognition. For his outstanding contributions to psychotherapy and science, Kriz received numerous honors, including the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2020 and the honorary membership of the Working Group for Humanistic Psychotherapy (AGHPT) in 2021.

Jürgen Kriz, dessen akademischer Weg ihn durch die Universitäten Hamburg und Wien führte, promovierte 1969 zum Dr. phil. in den Fächern Psychologie, Philosophie, Pädagogik sowie Astronomie und Astrophysik. Seine Karriere begann er am Institute for Advanced Studies in Wien, bevor er an der Universität Hamburg dozierte und später, von 1972 bis 1974, als Professor für Statistik an der Universität Bielefeld tätig war. Von 1974 bis 1999 leitete er den Lehrstuhl für Empirische Sozialforschung, Statistik und Wissenschaftstheorie an der Universität Osnabrück, gefolgt von einer Professur für Psychotherapie und Klinische Psychologie bis 1999.
Als Gastprofessor wirkte Kriz unter anderem in Wien, Zürich, Berlin, Riga, Moskau und den USA. Er war maßgeblich an der internationalen multidisziplinären Zeitschrift „Gestalt Theory“ beteiligt und Herausgeber der Lehrbuchreihe „Basiswissen Psychologie“. Mit über 300 wissenschaftlichen Publikationen, darunter mehr als 20 Monographien und etwa 100 Buchkapitel, prägte er insbesondere die Bereiche der Statistik, Forschungsmethodik und Wissenschaftskritik. Besonders bekannt ist seine Entwicklung der Personzentrierten Systemtheorie.
Seine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den Grenzen formaler Modelle und die Betonung der Bedeutung von Subjektivität in der Psychotherapieforschung fanden breite Anerkennung. Für seine herausragenden Beiträge zur Psychotherapie und Wissenschaft erhielt Kriz zahlreiche Ehrungen, darunter 2020 das Verdienstkreuz am Bande des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und 2021 die Ehrenmitgliedschaft der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Humanistische Psychotherapie (AGHPT).
