Prof. Dr. med. Rainer Matthias Holm-Hadulla is an Affiliated Professor of Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at Heidelberg University. He also serves as a supervisor and training analyst (IPA) at various psychotherapeutic training institutes and is a Research Fellow at the “Marsilius Kolleg”, Heidelberg University’s Center of Excellence for Interdisciplinary Research, where his focus lies on creativity, art, and psychiatry. In addition, he regularly teaches as a visiting professor at the Universidad de Chile.

He studied medicine and philosophy at the universities of Marburg, Rome, and Heidelberg from 1970 to 1976, followed by clinical training in surgery, internal medicine, and general medicine. He then specialized in neurology, psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, and psychotherapy at Heidelberg University, where he also worked as an assistant professor with research and teaching responsibilities in the areas of schizophrenia, psychosomatic and depressive disorders, and psychotherapy.

From 1986 to 2016, he was Director of the Psycho-Social Counseling Center for Students at Heidelberg University, with research focusing on depression, counseling, and creativity. His academic work has included frequent lectures and visiting professorships in South America, particularly at the Universidad de Chile, the Universidad de Buenos Aires, and the Universidad Diego Portales. He received fellowships from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and was appointed Training Analyst by the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) in 1996.

That same year, he became Professor of Psychotherapeutic Medicine at Heidelberg University. His empirical and hermeneutic psychotherapy research and his interdisciplinary studies on creativity have been supported by the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation and the Klaus Tschira Foundation. He has held guest professorships at Beihang University in Beijing and at the University of California, Berkeley, and conducted research at the "Morphomata" Center at Cologne University.

In 2015, he was appointed to the Academia Argentina de Ciencias, Psicoanálisis y Psiquiatría, and in 2023, he was named an honorary member of the Academia Chilena de Medicina.

Since 2017, he has been Director of the Heidelberg Institute for Coaching (hic), offering coaching and consultation for researchers, staff, and students in cooperation with the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS). He continues to teach and research at Heidelberg University and various training institutes, focusing particularly on creativity and the intersection of art and psychiatry. As Principal Investigator, he has led international studies on student mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and on social isolation and depression.

Prof. Dr. med. Rainer Matthias Holm-Hadulla ist affiliierter Professor für Psychiatrie, Psychosomatische Medizin und Psychotherapie an der Universität Heidelberg. Darüber hinaus ist er Supervisor und Lehranalytiker (IPA) an verschiedenen psychotherapeutischen Ausbildungsinstituten sowie Research Fellow am „Marsilius Kolleg“, dem Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung der Universität Heidelberg, wo er sich insbesondere mit den Themen Kreativität, Kunst und Psychiatrie beschäftigt. Als Gastprofessor ist er regelmäßig an der Universidad de Chile tätig.

Er studierte von 1970 bis 1976 Medizin und Philosophie in Marburg, Rom und Heidelberg und absolvierte anschließend seine klinische Ausbildung in Chirurgie, Innerer Medizin und Allgemeinmedizin. Es folgte die Facharztausbildung in Neurologie, Psychiatrie, psychosomatischer Medizin und Psychotherapie an der Universität Heidelberg. Dort war er als Assistenzprofessor in Forschung und Lehre tätig, mit Schwerpunkten auf der Psychopathologie schizophrener, psychosomatischer und depressiver Erkrankungen sowie der Psychotherapie.

Seit 1986 leitete er bis 2016 die Psychosoziale Beratungsstelle für Studierende der Universität Heidelberg, verbunden mit intensiver Forschung zu Depression, Beratung und Kreativität. Internationale Lehr- und Forschungstätigkeiten führten ihn wiederholt nach Südamerika, insbesondere als mehrfacher DAAD-Stipendiat und Gastprofessor an die Universidad de Chile, die Universidad de Buenos Aires sowie die Universidad Diego Portales. 1996 wurde er zum Professor für Psychotherapeutische Medizin an der Universität Heidelberg ernannt. Forschungsprojekte zur hermeneutischen und empirischen Psychotherapieforschung sowie zur Kreativität wurden u.a. von der Manfred Lautenschläger und der Klaus Tschira Stiftung gefördert.

Weitere Stationen seiner internationalen Tätigkeit waren u.a. Gastprofessuren an der Beihang University in Peking, an der University of California in Berkeley sowie Forschungsaufenthalte am „Morphomata“-Zentrum der Universität Köln. Er wurde 2015 in die Academia Argentina de Ciencias, Psicoanálisis y Psiquiatría aufgenommen und 2023 zum Ehrenmitglied der Academia Chilena de Medicina ernannt.

Seit 2017 leitet er das Heidelberger Institut für Coaching (hic), in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ) und dem Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS). Zuletzt war er als Principal Investigator in internationalen Studien zu psychischer Gesundheit von Studierenden während der COVID-19-Pandemie sowie zu sozialer Isolation und Depression tätig.
